THE STAND ALONE SOLAR POWER SYSTEM EXPLAINED
The system is automatic in that it produces power when needed and charges the batteries from the sun during the day, for use at night. Your system has been designed around your power requirements; i.e. the power demand profile you completed in the earlier stages of the design process. It is typically intended to give about 3 days of your normal power use in cloudy weather when the charge level of the batteries should be checked manually and a decision made whether to start the backup generator.
The solar array is made up of a number of modules, commonly referred to as panels. The array converts the sunlight into DC electric current.
The array does not need to be maintained, other than occasional cleaning when need in particularly dusty environments, where the rain (or lack of it) fails to keep them clean. Washing with water is usually enough to remove dust, however if the modules have thick dirt or grime, warm water and a sponge should help. It is advisable to do this early morning before the modules have become hot. While you are there, check for any defects such as cracks, chips or discoloration.
When the modules are located on your roof, or as part of one of our “solar sheds” where there is a risk of falling during cleaning, you must use a barrier (e.g. scaffolding) to prevent you from falling or weak an approved fall arrest harness that is secured correctly.
